I’ve been collecting knives ever since I got my first Spyderco Rescue back when the clip was part of the handle. I had it for years before I lost it but that knife was what started it all for me. While I do collect other knives, Spyderco is by far my favorite.
I’ve been wanting some custom scales (the grippy part of the knife handle) for a good while now but they can be pretty expensive. I’m a member over at EDCForums and they had a huge pre-sale thread on various gear and I noticed these scales. They started with a small order to not overwhelm the maker and I’m so glad I ordered these.
I was torn between the Cocobolo Wood and The Zebra Wood and just basically flipped a coin and ordered the Zebra Wood. These were the first scales I’ve gotten and I had no idea how to even get them on there. Erin and I watched some videos and then went to work. I got them part way on but had to leave and by the time I got back she had it all back together! It wasn’t as hard as it looks. You just have to take your time and be very careful.
I’m so happy I ordered these. They wood feels great and looks better than I had hoped. I love natural materials like leather, canvas and wood and these scales did not disappoint. The wood grain makes this knife go really well with my other gear.
Here are a couple more shots:
I’m very happy with how this turned out. They seem tough, look great and are very light weight. Custom scales can go for hundreds but these were only $54 and worth every penny. I got mine for the Spyderco Tenacious but they also make them for the Ambitious and Persistence (both Spyderco) if you prefer. Highly recommended.
I picked these up from the EDCForums.com store. I loved the Zebra Wood edition so much that I had to order the Cocobolo version as well. They should be here in a few weeks and I’ll post up some pics.
